Project overview

The project focuses on exploring a lower-cost and more supply-resilient alternative to an existing Linux-based smart home hub by using a more constrained MCU-based hardware architecture while preserving the core customer experience of controlling smart heating and other connected Zigbee devices through cloud services and a mobile application.

The work will begin with a technology demonstrator on off-the-shelf development boards and then progress toward production-quality embedded software, platform and application integration, internal trials, and eventual qualification.

Position overview

We are looking for a Senior Embedded C++ Engineer to contribute to the development of a next generation smart home hub solution based on a constrained MCU architecture. In this role, you will work on embedded software that powers device communication, cloud connectivity, and core control functionality while ensuring performance and efficiency on resource limited hardware. You will collaborate with cross functional teams to evolve the solution from early prototypes into production ready systems and support integration with cloud services and mobile applications.

Technology stack

Embedded C/C++, ESP-IDF, Zigbee, MQTT, AWS IoT Core

Responsibilities

Build PoC firmware on development boards
Integrate Zigbee radio and network coprocessor stacks
Implement core hub functionality, including pairing, device communication, command and control, and reporting
Optimize memory and flash usage on constrained MCUs
Support OTA updates, diagnostics, and production readiness
Identify and de-risk areas where the current implementation may not be directly portable
Advise on MCU platform choices, SDK constraints, portability risks, and long-term maintainability

Requirements

Strong embedded C/C++ development skills
Experience with RTOS and constrained embedded systems
Hands-on experience with Wi-Fi, BLE, Zigbee, and 802.15.4 technologies
Experience with secure boot, OTA updates, provisioning, and certificate-based device identity
Experience with MQTT and cloud-connected IoT devices
Experience optimizing memory and flash usage on constrained MCUs

Nice to have

Experience with Espressif SDK / ESP-IDF
Silicon Labs MG2x Zigbee development experience
AWS IoT Core integration experience
Matter / Thread experience
Smart meter network experience
CAD-related exposure
